CHAPTER 12

Michael, Liz and Jared forwarded the terrifying call to Bob Salazar, and, reluctantly, to Seth Williams.

“I’d rather not get Seth involved,” Michael told Jared, “but we need to make sure your phone line is monitored by the police. If he calls again, the police should be able to trace where the call came from. They may be able to do it retroactively as it relates to the original call depending on the equipment they have. In case they don’t have the right equipment, I’d expect them to call in some help from another department with better equipment.”

“If Seth can be bothered,” Liz said.

“I’m hoping that having the whole world watching closely, as they will as soon as this hits the news, will give him the impetus to get to work solving the crime.”

Michael made the call to Seth, and to his credit, seemed to take it seriously. Liz didn’t know how she knew, but she had a distinct feeling Bob Salazar had given him a good tongue lashing. Michael reiterated that Seth should seek assistance from another department to make sure the phone line was monitored.

Seth didn’t make some smart-aleck comment, but simply agreed. He said he would put the full resources of his department on the case, and would immediately start an intensive search to look for the young woman the killer mentioned.

When he put the phone down Michael said, “He sounds like he’s on the case.”

“Let’s hope so,” Jared said.

“Are you sure you want to stay here tonight?” Liz asked Jared. “Are you worried?”

Jared puffed his chest out and pulled his shoulders back. “I’m sure he wouldn’t do anything to me. Don’t serial killers mostly kill women?”

“It’s more common,” Michael agreed. “Though there have been male victims.”

“I’m more worried about this young woman he’s talking about,” Jared continued. “Do you think we should start a search party ourselves?”

“We’ll have to think it over,” Michael said. “Sometimes, with serial killers, the best thing to do is keep everything quiet and away from the public. If the killer feels too much pressure, or like he might be found, he might kill early.

“On the other hand, of course it’s good to have as many of the general public searching as possible. Also, if you’re not giving the killer the media attention they crave, they may just do something horrific so they’ll be guaranteed coverage. It’s hard to know what to do. I don’t know who will be making the call about everything going public, but it won’t be me.

“Of course, you’re free to speak to the press if you want to, because you were the one who got the call. But I’d follow police protocol on this one. We’re clearly dealing with a psychopathic killer who is very, very dangerous. One wrong move could be fatal.”

“Are you sure you don’t want to come and stay at my Lodge?” Liz offered. “Just for tonight?”

“No, thanks anyway,” Jared said. “I’ll be fine. I don’t want the killer to think I’m in hiding and scared.
